In Japan, there are few opportunities to hear the sound of the Turkish clarinet. But what is the appeal of this instrument, which is still a mainstream instrument in Turkey, not only for clarinets but also for instrumental music? What makes it different from the ordinary clarinet in the first place? What is the reason why it continues to be loved in Turkey even today? We would like to introduce the charm of this instrument from various angles, including its characteristic tone that sounds like a mournful human voice, the concept of makam, which includes microtones different from those of Western music, its unique playing method, and its main performers.

　The main feature of the clarinet is that it is more than 10 cm longer than an ordinary clarinet (Bb pipe). The Turkish clarinet is a G-tube, and the center note is just in the range of the human voice. Also, it is not the Böhm system commonly used in Japan, but the Albert system (with a different key arrangement and fingering), which is similar to the clarinets of the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic, and the Ehlers system.

　The music is largely influenced by the concept of Arabic music, and in modern times, Western pop-like music uses scales that include microtones (makam) and improvisation (taksim) at the beginning of a piece of music.

　We would like to work on pieces that suit our Japanese sensibilities and deepen our understanding of Turkish music culture. I also believe that there are many hints for new playing techniques in the clarinets used in Japan.
